The mutual efforts to encourage Canada-Brazil cooperation are conducted by cooperation agencies, academic ties and diplomatic missions. The present project aims to aggregate the current efforts with a political and intercultural dialogue conducted by young Canadian and Brazilian professionals and students in themes of common multilateral interest.
Brazcanet aims to coordinate the dialogue sustained in principles as inclusiveness, independence, interdisciplinary and multiculturalism. The discussions promoted in the network are expected to occur with independence, impartiality and non partisan basis. Brazcanet is a virtual platform operating by moderators and its activities are organized in bi-annual discussions cycles on themes of Brazil-Canada mutual interest. The partner researchers are expected to develop as final product of their work research quality projects and policy papers.
In this spirit the 2009/2010 dialogue looks forward to promote reflections about Brazil-Canada Cooperation toward the Haitian Sustainable Democracy. The expectative is to form at least 4 groups, each one composed of people from both nationalities to discuss themes as economic and social development, sustainable development, environment and energy development and equality and peace promotion.
Right now we invite the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation Network to join this idea and together contribute to the establishment of Brazcanet and to support the 2009/2010 dialogue cycle. BRAZCANet mediator
Canada and Brazil are major players in many aspects of politic, economic and also in the balance of power in Americas. Beyond the historical connections that include elements of the Latin route both countries develop a soft voice in the promotion of the dialogue between conflictive nations and inside the American continent.
Brazil alone represents the 3rd economy in Americas and the 1st in Latin America. Brazil geography, population and economy make it an important player on global issues such as trade liberalization, energy supplier and . By its turn, Canada is the 2nd economy in Americas and the 8th in the World. Canada is ranked the 2 largest country in the world, being the largest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Brazil and Canada are partners in diverse fields ranging from infrastructure development to cultural joint initiatives. Formal bilateral dialogue are regularly held on diverse themes of political and international security issues and both countries co-operate in areas such as human rights, governance, federalism, cultural diversity, environment, labor, aboriginal affairs, sports, health and education.
Inside the America continent Brazil and Canada have being contributing in partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations in areas of common interest as environment protection, cultural diversity and peacekeeping operations in conflicting countries.
Amongst others initiatives the trilateral collaboration in peacekeeping, economic and social development of Haiti represents the cooperation capacity of Brazil and Canada. Also in the field of cultural and academic partnerships Canada and Brazil share strong connections with fruitful results over the years.
The Brazil-Canada Network for Politic and Intercultural Dialogue
The idea to build a network for Brazil-Canada Dialogue rose during debates in the University of Laval and University of Ottawa in the autumn of 2006. At that time a group of young professionals, academics and students engaged in the project of building a network turned to promote and improve the bilateral dialogue between Brazil and Canada as a basis to increase the relationship between these nations.
The Network for Brazil-Canada Dialogue (BRAZCANET) is a non-governmental and non-profit platform turned to improve and promote the mutual understanding of Brazil and Canada issues. The idea to build a network for political and intercultural dialogue composed by young professionals from Brazil and Canada resulted from the existing gap of specific channel to promote the political and intercultural dialogue between young professionals and students from both countries.
The proposed network aims to stimulate the engagement of young Brazilians and Canadians interest in common themes of mutual interest. The belief that the comparative analysis of national realities done in an independently, impartial and non partisan way realized by young researchers from both countries will contribute to elaborate sustainable policies and cooperation between them.
The operating principles of the network include:
* Inclusiveness regarding young professionals and students which interest comprises the enhance of dialogue between Brazil and Canada;
* Independence relative to commercial, political or ideological interests.
* Interdisciplinarity working on a diversified basis of academic, artistic, cultural, politic and economic foundation.
* Multiculturalism recognizing the relevance of different cultures and cultural identities to promote social cohesion.
The BRAZCANet looks to work cooperatively and complementary with current initiatives aiming to improve the Brazil Canada relations. The current initiatives include universities cooperation agreements, civil society joint projects and diplomatic ties to mention some. All of them represent specific interests and are continuously promoting Brazil and Canada connections. The following institutions are exclusively turned to the mutual cooperation.
To better collaborate with the current initiatives the Brazcanet focus special attention on the engagement of young professionals and students who are expected to work in teams composed of multicultural diversified background members.
